Simple wet-in-wet rock |
|
Materials used: No. 6 Round Brush, No. 2 Rigger,
Bockingford 140 lb. (300g) Watercolour Paper.
Paints: Ultramarine, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna,
Cadmium Yellow Pale

1.
Paint whole rock using Raw Sienna and while wet,
drop a mixture of Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna into
the shadow areas. Note that the bottom of the rock
is painted leaving grass shapes (painting negative
shapes). At the side of the rock the grass shapes
have been painted in the darker mix (positive
shapes).
Leave to dry. |

|
2.
When dry paint in the cracks in the rock using a
mix of Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna. Look for the
natural places where cracks would be and keep them
generally going in the same direction.
Leave to dry. |
 |
3.
Using a mix of Ultramarine and Cadmium Yellow Pale,
paint the area of grass in front of the rock. Start
by lightly sweeping across the bottom of the rock in
one stroke of the brush covering the grass painted
in negative. It doesn't matter if some of the blades
of grass are not completely covered, it adds to the
effect.
While this
area is wet, drop in a mix of Burnt Sienna and
Ultramarine into the grass area. |
